Shower niche: the luxurious (and affordable) touch that transforms your bathroom

The wall-mounted niche has become one of the most popular additions to any renovation project: it frees up floor space, keeps your bottles in order and, above all, gives the shower a look worthy of a top-of-the-range spa… for just a few hundred dollars. At L’Entrepôt de la Réno, you’ll find two ready-to-install stainless steel formats – the single 12 “× 12” model and the double 12 “× 24” model – that stand out for their built-in waterproofing, quick installation and low price.

Why switch to a prefabricated doghouse?

  • Integrated waterproofing: monocoque body in 304 stainless steel, inclined at 1°, designed to evacuate water and limit the risk of infiltration (unlike home-tiled niches, where every joint is a weak point).
  • Express installation: cut out the opening, screw in the niche, seal the perimeter – finished in less than an hour.
  • Real savings: no additional tiling costs, no complex membranes to multiply.
  • Spa design: brushed or matte black finishes to match marble or textured PVC panels.
  • Minimal maintenance: seamless stainless steel surface = one wipe with a microfiber and it’s clean.

Installation steps (site version)

  1. Tracing & cutting
    • Transfer the niche template between the studs (usually 14 ½”).
    • Cut gypsum or cement board cleanly with a multi-purpose tool.
  2. Create the frame
    • Screw on a 2 × 4 surround to support the niche.
    • Check alignment and depth in relation to the finished facing.
  3. Insert & screw
    • Apply a bead of elastomer sealant to the niche flange.
    • Slide in the niche, screw into the frame and check the integrated slope.
  4. Sealing the wall
    • Apply liquid or foil membrane over the flange to overlap and block any infiltration.
  5. Laying the cladding
    • Ceramic: glue and seal all around, leaving a soft silicone seal.
    • PVC panel: glue + screw, then peripheral silicone.

PVC or ceramic cladding? A few quick pointers

  • Quick installation vs. hand-crafted look:
    • PVC = fast bonding, no joints, lightweight.
    • Ceramic = longer assembly time, but infinite patterns and formats.
  • Weight:
    • Ultra-lightweight PVC (ideal for non-load-bearing walls).
    • Heavier ceramic (provide reinforced support).
  • Interview:
    • PVC = virtually no joints to scrub.
    • Ceramic = joints to be cleaned periodically.

The good news is that the stainless steel niche accepts both without modification, simply by adjusting the cut-out in the cladding.

Decorative ideas to enhance the niche

  • Waterproof LED lighting glued to the underside of the top cheek, for an atmospheric glow.
  • Contrasting back: metallic mosaic or black marble inside the niche for a “frame” effect.
  • Symmetrical duo: two single niches at different heights to give rhythm to the wall.
  • Matching accessories: matte black or stainless steel dispensers to extend the finish.

Maintenance in five seconds

  • Microfiber wipe + mild soap, then rinse; avoid abrasive powders, which dull the finish.
  • Annual inspection of all-round silicone seal and replacement if necessary.
